Mark Charan Newton was born in 1981, and holds a degree in Environmental Science. After working in bookselling, he moved into editorial positions at imprints covering film and media tie-in fiction, and later, science fiction and fantasy. Nights of Villjamur, the start of the Legends of the Red Sun series, was his first major novel, published in June 2009 by Macmillan / Tor UK, and coming in June 2010 from Random House / Bantam Spectra); it is an epic fantasy set in the far future, and has echoes of the dying earth subgenre. City of Ruin follows in the UK in June 2010, and Mark has another two books coming in this series from Tor UK, who acquired world rights.
The Guardian newspaper said: “This is fantasy with vast scope and ambition… a complex, eldritch vision.”
“Genre labels just don’t apply here. With Nights of Villjamur Mark has managed to incorporate so many wonderfully varied ideas and themes into a decent blend of excitement and interest that the marketing department is going to have to invent a whole new section just for him.” – Peter F. Hamilton
“Newton combines strange and vivid creations with very real and pressing concerns with estimable commitment and passion.” – China Miéville
